Coverstar
For my front cover I want to create close up shot of my models face so her persona is clear and her expression is meaningful. An example of something like this is:
Media Trip- 11/11/2015
On Wednesday 11th November 2015 we went on a trip to 'Regent St Cinema' to witness an interview of film critic Anna Smith. She gave us an insight on her profession and her personal opinions. This was to help us with our music magazines and possible future careers.

We were also taught about lighting:

Fill Light= No shadows
Hairline Light= Back of the head lighting
Snoot= Directed light
Soft Boxes= Softens light

Evaluation
Taking the pictures was not too hard as it required us to
find people to pose as models for the photography and many were not so willing.
This gave us a taste of what we’d have to do for the main task (music magazines)
but much more professionally. Using original photography was fun as it made the
magazine different from others and stand out. To manipulate our images we used
Photoshop software (for some for the first time) to become familiar with it so
it becomes easier for future use. I tried simple editing and from that created
my front cover of my ‘LSC’ magazine. For my magazine I had 3 consistent colour
scheme which consisted of red, black and white. I chose these three colours
because they were all complimenting and did not make the front cover and
contents page look tacky. My use of font was also consistent as I used only 2
different types to create an edgy look. One difficulty was the colour of the
font not blending into the cover picture and making sure it was bold and bright
so it could stand out and be read clearly. Although the design is of a beginner
it has given me room to improve in order to help successfully complete my first
task. Page layout for me was easy as just by looking at the design you knew
what went where because it either looked odd or completely right. The entirety
of using the software was a difficult but eye opening task as it was first time
using it and from the first experience it can help me complete the main task
(music magazine).
Being it our preliminary task there is a lot of room for
improvement, especially when it comes to using InDesign and Photoshop software.
One thing I can improve is my use of photography, this should be more
professional and edited more professionally. This will help give my magazine
look like an experts. Also the layout of the pages in the magazine for e.g. the
front cover, everything from the picture(s) to the text should be aligned using
grids and rulers so it gives a neat and skilled look. Another thing to improve
is my use of font and whether or not it is suited to a magazine or the genre of
the magazine. Creating the small conventions on a magazine like puffs, more
exciting cover lines. These conventions make the magazine more appealing and
look like the common mag’ that people would buy. Using the right language for a
magazine is essential as it rounds the magazine to the specified genre, having
a specific language technique in the text can really increase the viewers of
the mag’.
Three key points for the development of when I produce my
main task (music magazine) is to take more professional pictures suited to my
genre and editing them so they are ready for the pages of my magazine. Another
key feature is to choose the type of language to make the genre of the magazine
clear to the reader, this also so we can show we understand magazine writing
styles and how each is suited to different genres. A final key feature to look
out for is professionalism in layout and structure, this will make the magazine
look tidy and ready for viewers.

Textual Analysis- XXL Magazine
Textual Analysis
For my Music Magazine
I’m using an R&B/Hip-hop genre. I am using ‘XXL’ magazine as my case study
for my own magazine. ‘XXL’ uses a very bold, clear masthead. This is to appeal
to customers when it’s orderly stacked on the shelf in store, also the colour
red is bright and eye-catching which gives it that feel of fun and evokes
interest in a possible reader. The fact that the cover image is in front of the
masthead is risky, but it means the magazine is already popular and will easily
be recognised. The cover image is a group picture of a few of female and male
hip-hop artists that are new and exceedingly popular for e.g. ‘Fetty Wap’,
‘Bobby Shmurda’ and ‘Tink’. Having artists like these on ‘XXL’ magazine
increases not only popularity for the artists but the magazine that features
these extremely successful artists. The Cover picture takes over the whole page
and the names are squashed around the picture in ‘graffiti’ font to suit the
genre of the magazine. The entire front cover uses a consistent colour scheme
of ‘red’, ‘blue’, ‘black’ and ‘white’ which are complimentary to each other as
they are mostly primary colours, also it looks professional and stands out as a
hip-hop/R&B magazine. The use of this colour scheme makes the magazine look
like it is going to be a fun and interesting read, therefore increasing the
amount of views ‘XXL’ gets.
The contents is split
into different sub-topics such as, ‘features’ and ’departments’, this makes it
easier for the reader to find pages they are really interested in reading. The
contents page consists of the same image shot as the front cover but of the
artists doing different poses. This makes it clear that the main article(s)
will be about them. The pictures used throughout the contents page(s) are in a
consistent theme which means they are all from the same photoshoot. Each single
shot portrays the artists’ character and style. The contents page is simple and
clear which will help the reader find their pages of interest.
‘XXL’ magazine feature
a lot of adverts. This is one way the magazine makes its money, it’s also a
great marketing scheme to sell products used or recommended by famous artists.
A lot of the promo done by these artists make them more popular and perfect to
feature in the magazine.
Each article has a font
consistency which is suiting to its genre/field. This makes it look
professional and appealing to the reader’s eyes. The articles are in columns
and in a ‘Q & A’ format making the article easier to read. Any of the font
that is in bold is either pointing out its importance or pointing out what the
publisher wants you to read the most, usually anything in bold, brightly
coloured print is read first by the reader because it is eye catching.
Specifically in this issue of ‘XXL’ magazine the use of bright colours like
green, blue, reds, pink etc. is continuous, this may sound really tacky but the
editor uses these colours really subtly but is still playful.
Media Kit
This is an 'XXL' Media Kit. This is what tells us all about the magazine, including genre, aims and several statistics that are important for the industry.
In this screen shot it tells us the percentage of ethnicity who read the magazine including gender and
age.

Induction Assignment
This was our induction assignment. We explored the making of double page spreads and analysed them using the key terms we learnt during induction lessons. Our first assignment was to create our own double page spread and articles. During the induction assignment we used InDesign software to make the spread.
